Captain, Leader, Winner – Jordan Henderson named FWA’s Footballer of the Year

What a year it has been for Jordan Henderson.

After captaining Liverpool to Champions League success last year, the 30-year-old went on to cement his status as an Anfield legend by leading the Reds to their first-ever English Premier League (EPL) title this season.

Oh, he also won the Club World Cup, for good measure.

And now, Henderson will have to clear more room in his already packed trophy cabinet, after he was named the Football Writers' Association Men's Footballer of the Year.

The English midfielder, who won the award after seeing off stiff competition from his Liverpool team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, and in particular, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, received more than a quarter of the votes.

Ever the modest man, Henderson refused to take credit for winning the award, and instead attributed his success to the rest of his team-mates.

He said: “As grateful as I am, I don't feel like I can accept this on my own. I owe a lot to so many people but none more so than my current team-mates, who have been incredible and deserve this every bit as much as I do.

“I accept [the award] on behalf of this whole squad, because without them I'm not in a position to be receiving this honour. These lads have made me a better player - a better leader and a better person.

“If anything, I hope those who voted for me did so partly to recognise the entire team's contribution.”

Well, there’s more good news for you, Hendo. Due to our penchant for jumping on the bandwagon and cosying up to the flavour of the moment, we have decided to award you the honour of being our pick for this edition of Star-Track.

FBS says: Henderson bites his EPL medal to make sure it’s real, and that he’s not simply in a Manchester United fan’s nightmare. We can’t blame him. After 30 years of pain and near misses, even some die-hard Liverpool fans can still hardly believe they’ve finally won it.

FBS says: He might still be recovering from a knee injury, but nothing’s going to stop Henderson from doing his trademark trophy celebration shuffle. This sort of passion, determination and dedication to his craft is what makes Henderson such an incredible captain for Liverpool.

FBS says: A beaming Henderson shows off all the trophies he’s won these past two seasons. We can’t help but notice that he’s conspicuously left quite a bit of space in between each trophy. Preparing for more next year, perhaps?

FBS says: Henderson takes a moment at Anfield to quietly reflect on all the things he’s achieved since joining Liverpool in 2011. Oh boy, this is going to take a long while…
