Ronaldo and Mendes arrive in Manchester United to thrash out talks over future

After missing Manchester United’s pre-season tours of Thailand and Australia, the prodigal son that is Cristiano Ronaldo has finally deigned to return to the club that he professes to love with all his heart.

However, the 37-year-old’s return might prove to be short-lived. Or it might not.

As things stand, Ronaldo is understood to be keen on a move away from United, after having decided that playing in the Europa League does not quite tickle his fancy. He was spotted at United’s training ground on Tuesday with his agent Jorge Mendes, where they are expected to discuss the Portugal international’s future at the club.

Even the allure of playing under Erik Ten Hag, a three-time Dutch Eredivisie winner and more importantly, the reigning holder of the Bangkok Centenary Cup trophy, is not enough to convince the former Real Madrid star to stay at Old Trafford.

United, however, are adamant that Ronaldo will stay at the club for next season, unless a suitable bid for their highest-paid player ever comes in.

Indeed, Ten Hag has publicly declared that Ronaldo is in his plans for the season ahead, as he said: “We are planning for Cristiano Ronaldo for the season and that's it. I'm looking forward to working with him. Cristiano is not for sale. He is in our plans and we want success together.

“He's not with us and it's due to personal issues. I spoke with him before this issue came up. I had a conversation with him and I had a good talk. That is between Cristiano and me. What I can confirm is we had a really good conversation together. I didn't speak to him after (the news).”

The problem with Ronaldo’s desire to leave United, however, is that no team is willing to fork out the sort of money that he will cost them. His only chance is for Chelsea to show some interest in him, so that Barcelona will come swooping in to try and hijack the deal by paying in promises of money that they likely have no intention to keep.

Ronaldo, who has one year left on his contract with United, was their top scorer last season with 18 goals in 30 league appearances.
