Manchester United lose to Atletico, but all is good as the self-proclaimed ‘King’ declares he’s back

Having spent all of this past month lauding the value of pre-season results, Manchester United fans have finally changed their tune, after seeing their team lose 0-1 to Spain’s very own ‘Stoke City’, Atletico Madrid.

A solitary goal from Joao Felix was enough to condemn the Red Devils to their first pre-season loss, and suddenly the rose-tinted glasses that United fans have recently been wearing is starting to look a little less like the flower’s hue, and more like blood.

And United manager Erik ten Hag pinpointed his side’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal as the main reason for the defeat, as he said: “I think it was a tough workout and I think we contributed really well. I think the performance from our team was really good.

“In the end it's about the result, and the score was not good. You have to take benefits if you create chances. I think we created many chances, to produce at least one goal - that point, I am not satisfied. I have told the team it is not acceptable.”

Ten Hag, however, was less enthused about Atletico’s robustness in the tackles.

“I like competitiveness, but with respect. I don't want to have injuries as well,” Ten Hag complained. “That's why you have to keep respect for each other. I have seen some tackles which are maybe a little bit over the limit.”

But Ten Hag need not worry about United’s profligacy, because the ‘King’, Cristiano Ronaldo, is set to return to the club. What exactly this ‘King’ is ruler over, nobody knows for sure, but the Portuguese has hinted that he will be back on Sunday to help the Old Trafford outfit with destroying their team harmony their goalscoring woes, when they take on Rayo Vallecano in another friendly.

Having spent the entire summer hawking his services to every Champions League club out there, we are sure this ‘King’ will be given a warm welcome by United fans when he steps out onto the pitch…
