Manchester City are ‘legends’, Pep Guardiola proudly declares after EPL title win

So there will be no quadruple for Liverpool this season after all, as Manchester City secured a vital 3-2 victory over Aston Villa which saw them clinch the English Premier League (EPL) title.

But that was not before the Citizens did their best attempt to wipe out half of Manchester United fans everywhere by giving them a massive heart attack, as they allowed Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa to take a two goal lead at the Etihad Stadium through Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho.

In an eerie parallel to the 2013/2014 season, however, Gerrard and his men slipped up in the final 15 minutes of the game as City roared back with three goals in five minutes to get the win which confirmed their status as EPL champions.

More importantly for United fans, the result meant that Liverpool’s quadruple bid is – much like Paul Pogba’s career at Old Trafford – finally over, thus ensuring that the relevance of their famed ‘Treble Winners’ doesn’t go the way of Amber Heard’s acting career.

For that achievement itself, United fans will surely have to agree with Guardiola’s bold assertion that his City side can now be considered ‘legends’, following their fourth EPL title in five seasons.

“We are legends. When you win the Premier League four times in five seasons it's because these guys are so, so special,” said Guardiola. “We will be remembered. The first title we won with lots of margin, then at Brighton, then winning at home without fans and now with people, it's the best.”

In yet another display of the developing bromance between Klopp and Guardiola, the Spanish tactician also insisted that Liverpool are “not losers”, and praised them for pushing City all the way.

“The magnitude of your achievement is defined by the magnitude of your rival. I've never seen a team like Liverpool. I know it's tough but huge congratulations to them. They help us to be a better team,” said Guardiola.

“Jurgen Klopp said a few days ago that there are few winners but a lot of triers. I love this concept. I am a good trier, that is for sure. Am I going to say that Liverpool are losers after what they have done in the Premier League over the recent years?

“One team was a little, little, little, one inch better than them, but they are winners. Of course, society says there is just one who is first and the rest they are a disaster. That is giving an incredibly wrong message to the new generation, the kids.

“You have to be a good trier, do it every time, never give up. Both teams - Liverpool and ourselves - have done that in the last five years. Before you had to get 82 or 83 points, now you have to get 90, in this league, this country, with these teams against these managers and these players. It is quite remarkable.

“It is more difficult because of the opponent. How big is your rival? How big it is, your victory is higher. Nobody in this country can doubt that. Liverpool won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup on penalties, it is the same. Chelsea are the losers? No, they are not. They are not. But we just praise the other one.

“The team is incredibly proud but we could have lost the Premier League today. We were closer to losing it than winning it. But my opinion of my players is exactly the same as it was in Madrid.”
