Chelsea look to steal Cucurella from under the noses of Manchester City

Having seen almost every player they were interested in signing this summer snapped up unabashedly by Barcelona, Chelsea have decided to try and emulate the Catalans by doing their own heist and stealing the signature of Marc Cucurella.

After all, if you can’t beat them, join them, right?

The Brighton & Hove Albion full-back has been publicly courted by Manchester City all summer long, but talks have broken down between the two clubs over a difference in the valuation of the player.

Brighton are understood to want at least £50m (S$84.47m) for Cucurella. City, however, have been trying – far too late – to establish themselves as a financially prudent club, and are only willing to offer up to £40m for the Spaniard.

Brighton, of course, have since told City to stick their £40m where the sun does not shine – back into the ginormous vaults of Sheikh Mansour.

This has presented Chelsea with a valuable opportunity to swoop in like a Catalan-born vulture to try and entice the 24-year-old to London, with new owner Todd Boehly reportedly willing to meet Brighton’s asking price for the defender.

It is understood that Chelsea will likely also include youth prospect Levi Colwill as part of any deal, with Seagulls boss Graham Potter looking for depth in the centre of his defence.

Chelsea’s interest in Cucurella comes amidst reports that Barcelona are interested in signing Cesar Azpilicueta AND Marcos Alonso with all of £10 and a bucketful of dodgy promises to make good on paying all of their transfer fees.

Tuchel’s side will open their English Premier League (EPL) campaign Sunday when they take on Frank Lampard’s Everton.
